I saw a sad but not surprising email that came across today announcing that Digital Anarchy’s Transcriptive will hit end of life on May the 4th. Transcriptive was an Adobe Premiere extension and workflow that was one of the first, if not the first, text-based editing tool out there. It was at NAB 2017 when I remember walking through the always fun and greatly missed Plug-In Pavilion and seeing an old-school manual typewriter in the Digital Anarchy booth. It wasn’t front and center in their booth, but it certainly caught my attention and Digital Anarchy’s Chief Anarchist, Jim Tierney, walked me through exactly what Transcriptive was going to do.

What began as quite accurate cloud-based transcription right inside a Premiere panel evolved into full-on text-based editing workflows with Transcriptive. I wrote a full review of Transcriptive in its early iteration, and then as the years passed, Transcriptive evolved. One of the first mentions of AI in machine learning came in 2018 when Digital Anarchy teamed up with Speechmatics to help advance Transcriptive and other supporting tools along. In 2018, Transcriptive 2.0 shipped with Clip Mode, which is what made it even more useful, as you could work from transcriptions of source clips and edit right from text in the Transcriptive panel. The 2020 pandemic-era NAB at Home saw Transcriptive get a price cut and 2021 brought Rough Cutter, which took it much closer to the text-based editing we know today. Rough Cutter included an integration with the Transcriptive AI website, where multiple people could work on a transcript and text-based editing, which laid the groundwork for many of the text-based editing things we take for granted these days.

It’s no real surprise that Transcriptive is seeing the end of the road. When Adobe introduced native text-based editing in Premiere back in 2023, it was writing on the wall. While Transcriptive’s integration was good and pretty full-featured and even did some stuff that the native text-based editing didn’t do, it’s hard to beat native integration with a tool that you’re already paying for. As I’ve done with some of my other favorite tools that have reached their end of life, I just wanted to create a blog post and say fare thee well, Transcriptive.

Digital Anarchy still makes plenty of other tools for Premiere Pro, After Effects and others. Most notably, there’s Beauty Box for skin smoothing and overall ease of beauty work and they recently introduced ShotNotes for adding notes, comments, and to-do lists, all within a Premiere panel.

Transcriptive End of Life May 4th 2026
As we announced back in November, we’re going to be shutting down the Transcriptive web services next week.

The Premiere panel will continue to work, so any transcripts you already have won’t be affected. However, you won’t be able to get new transcripts after May 4th.

After many great years helping editors work faster and more efficiently, we’ve made the tough decision to discontinue Transcriptive and its related products on May 1st, 2026 — The products affected are Transcriptive Rough Cutter, PowerSearch, the Transcriptive Web App, and Eff-it.

This mostly means that after May, the web services will be shutdown. So you’ll no longer be able to transcribe with the Transcriptive panel, and the Web App will no longer be available.

There are no significant immediate changes.

And this only affects Transcriptive and related panels: PowerSearch and Effit.

All other Digital Anarchy plugins and panels will continue to be available. We’re not going anywhere, just re-focusing on our visual effects plugins.

The Transcriptive, PowerSearch, and Eff-it panels will continue to work in Premiere Pro as long as Adobe continues to support CEP panels. Adobe is moving to a new framework, UXP, but we expect older panels to continue working for at least another couple years (and most likely longer). So any projects you’ve used Transcriptive for will continue to work. (if you’re interested, here’s more info on why Adobe is doing this.) It does not affect our vfx plugins, only panels like Transcriptive.

Please note:

We’ve already stopped renewing Transcriptive subscriptions. If you see any charges please let us know and we’ll refund them.

You can continue importing transcripts from other sources and use the free Alignment function to use them in Transcriptive. This function is part of the Premiere panel and will continue to work as long as the panel does.

Again, this does not affect any other Digital Anarchy products. We’re continuing to develop, sell, and support our VFX plugins. We’ve got some cool new AI features in the works!

It saddens us to make this announcement, but with Premiere adding transcripts natively, the writing has been on the wall for a while. It also didn’t make sense for us to re-write Transcriptive as a UXP panel. So it’s just time to move on and focus our development efforts on our visual effects plugins.

We’re deeply grateful for your support over the years. Transcriptive was the first fully integrated text-based editing solution for an editing platform, and it has helped thousands of editors speed up post-production. It’s been incredible to be part of your creative process, and thank you for being part of the Transcriptive community.
