Here’s one we didn’t see coming: Apple has acquired MotionVFX. This was announced via news on the MotionVFX website. MotionVFX has long been one of the top makers of effects, templates and motion graphics plugins for Final Cut Pro, going back many years. We’ve covered MotionVFX many times over the years here on ProVideo Coalition, as they are one of the original companies creating quality plug-ins for Final Cut Pro.

MotionVFX really has a long history with Final Cut Pro. I remember talking to them at NAB back in the 2010s. Originally, all of their products were sold with perpetual licenses, but they later moved more toward a subscription model. While MotionVFX has long been mainly associated with Final Cut Pro, they have, in recent years, developed products for Adobe Premiere Pro / After Effects and DaVinci Resolve. Time will tell what will happen to these products. This acquisition comes not long after Adobe acquired Film Impact, a similar company that produced plug-ins for Adobe Premiere Pro. Adobe rolled the Film Impact plug-ins into the Premiere subscription, so we’ll watch with great interest to see how Apple integrates MotionVFX into FCP. With Apple’s recent shift to more subscription models with Final Cut Pro for iPad and the Apple Creator Studio, MotionVFX integration is anybody’s guess. But the MotionVFX portfolio is deep, and they’ve always created very high-quality products, so it will be exciting to see where Apple takes MotionVFX now that it’s part of the company.
