After an Open Letter in 2009 about the importance of using SFTP (Secure FTP) in order to have our passwords travel through the Internet encrypted, followed by two short articles about JVC’s GY-HM650 news camera, I am glad to report that JVC has now committed to adding SFTP to the GY-HM650 in an update in May 2013, in addition to other improvements.
Prior articles where I have emphasized the importance of Secure FTP
- SFTP: An open letter to all software developers with FTP-only support… Regular FTP is quite dangerous; SFTP is much safer. from December 2009
- For broadcast news, “Starbucks is the new microwave!” from April 2012
- JVC answers questions about GY-HM650 news camera with WiFi + FTP from January 2013
Now, users of the GY-HM650 who have an SFTP server will be much less likely to have it be hacked.
Other improvements in JVC’s 2.0 firmware for the GY-HM650
Beyond SFTP, the 2.0 firmware also adds file transfers in the background as shooters continue to record footage and broadcast live HD, even at a different bit rate than the local recording. Here is a link to the full JVC press release.

My latest ebook
My most recent ebook is available in two languages. The format is Kindle, but even if you don’t have a Kindle device, you can read Kindle books on many other devices using a free Kindle app. That includes iPad, iPhone, Android phones, Android tablets, Mac computers, Windows computers, some Blackberry phones and Windows 7 phones.
In English, it is currently available in the following Amazon stores, depending upon your region:
- At Amazon.com (for all of the Americas and the Republic of India)
- Amazon.co.jp (Japan)
- Amazon.co.uk (United Kingdom)
- Amazon.de (Germany)
- Amazon.es (Spain, pero a lo mejor lo prefieres en castellano, a continuación)
- Amazon.fr (France)
- Amazon.it (Italy)
If you’re going to buy a Kindle book as a gift, you must do so via the Pan-American Amazon store (the first one listed above), regardless of where you live or where the recipient lives.
