Hi Richard – Do you think any of those tapes survived? In May 1967, my all-girl rock & roll band called, The Pretty Kittens, traveled through Vietnam entertaining the troops. We were interviewed by John Steinbeck IV and were filmed performing our rock show at The American Forces Vietnam Network in Saigon.

I had a band we called the “Boys in the Band”. We were in Cu Chi VN in 1967, we played the officers club at the 25th Aviation and they liked us and sent us to Saigon, AFVN TV to be taped, 10 July 1967. I’m still looking for that tape, at least i found a picture of us on the but it’s gone now. I dodn’t know how to search the National Archieve’s but I had a man’s name, Rick Holen from Vencenne’s college, can’t find him now either. Hope your well.

Forgot to say we were from Southern California. We also entertained at the Thai Air Force Bases in Thailand for 2 weeks. Hope to hear from you. I am writing a memoir about those 3 1/2 months. and have pictures, etc. to prove everything. Dianne

The website of the Australian War Memorial has a 2-hour recording of a radio broadcast by American Forces Vietnam Network (AFVN), Channel 54, created on 7 May 1969. See this link https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/S00675

I can’t find any surviving video recordings of AFVN on Channel 11. There are however quite a few recordings on YouTube for THVN9 (Chanel 9 VHF), a Saigon TV station at the time, which was also backed by US funds.

After the Vietnam war, THVN 9 (Truyen Hinh Vietnam 9, or Vietnam Television Channel 9) was renamed HTV 9 (Ho Chi Minh Television Channel 9). The same channel number and frequency would continue to be used until just a few years ago, when Vietnam switched off analog TV broadcasting.
