Announced at CES 2025, the first Planck SSD was, then, the smallest phone-first SSD for creators on the go, offering up to 2TB storage & 10 Gbps transfer speeds, able to unlock 4K/120 Apple ProRes on iPhones. Able to store hours of 4K video in a tiny form factor, Planck SSD is designed to work with all your devices, so you can record and transfer files effortlessly between devices, no matter the platform. After introduction and the Kickstarter campaign, the device  got a new name, Creator SSD, paving the way for similar products.

Now, one year later, Planck and ShiftCam Gear introduce another solution in the same family, announced as the “smallest mobile backup for your photos & videos”, Planck Essential SSD. A mobile-first, plug-and-play storage that frees you to keep shooting life as it happens, this is, the company says, “your phone’s new thumbdrive”. Capture your everyday on your phone, back up your photos & videos on the Essential SSD, and afterwards plug it into your laptop to transfer—no setup needed.

Just 5 g and coin-small, with up to 400 MB/s to back up photos, Planck Essential SSD  allows you to transfer and edit on the go. It plugs directly into USB-C for instant offload and sharing across phones, tablets, and laptops—no cables, apps, or monthly fees.

Available with 256 and 512GB storage size, the device is compatible with smartphones  – iPhone 15 and up) and Android (Samsung, Google Pixel, etc.) – and iPads and Android tablets, but also with desktops (macOS, Windows, Linux) and consoles (PlayStation, Xbox – required host with USB3.2 Gen2 or higher for maximum performance). The file system uses exFAT  as default, which supports cross-platform use.

The Planck Essential SSD costs $73.86 for the 256GB version and $92.61 for the 512GB version.
