With superior optical performance and mobility, the NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR will give professional sport photographers a new tool as it will be able to reach up to 420mm.

The image shared by Nikon to illustrate its story is not of the final lens, as “the appearance of the actual product may differ from the photo shown above” but the NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR will probably not be very different from what is shown here. What we know and it’s important to most photographers is that the new telephoto zoom lens comes with a built-in 1.4x teleconverter that effectively converts it into a 168-420mm F4 zoom, when there is need for some extra reach, while keeping the same weight.

Part of the S-Line series of NIKKOR Z lenses, a grade of NIKKOR Z lenses that demonstrate outstanding optical performance, adhering to a high standard of design principles and quality control, the new NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR is in development now, so no information of price of availability is given by Nikon. Still, the company claims that “The superior optical performance and mobility of this lens will support professional photographers’ imaging expression in genres such as sports photography and beyond.”

Nikon also notes that “Specifications, design, product name and supplied accessories may differ by country or area” and that “Specifications and equipment are subject to change without any notice or obligation on the part of the manufacturer” while stating that “Nikon will continue to pursue a new dimension in optical performance while meeting users’ needs, contributing to the development of imaging culture, with the hope of expanding possibilities for imaging expression.”

Designed for sports photographers, the NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR lens will have a high price. Just for reference, the AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR, another super-telephoto zoom lens with a built-in 1.4X teleconverter, costs around $12,000. Designed for sports and wildlife photographers, its built-in converter allows it to reach 560mm f/5.6 (840mm equivalent on a DX body).
