Exactly 24 days after NAB Show Vegas and 24 days ahead of Cine Gear 2026 in Los Angeles, both Canon and Sony released new cameras and lenses. After teasing “R” models on Wednesday, May 13th, the announcements came via video release 30 minutes after each other.

Not to be confused with the roman numerals indicating other new camera releases (see Sony below), Canon makes a clear stance on who the new R6 V is for. It is, per the YouTube video sharing its release, “built for video,””made for today’s creatives,” and designed for “content on the go.” “Make Movie Magic” shares the press release and website. Perfect for “vlogging” shares the release video. It’s not C for Cinema, but V for video. Essentially, the Canon R6 V math is to take the Canon C50, add in-body stabilization, add a vertical tripod mount, keep the cooling system, remove the EVF, and remove the XLR inputs. They’ve modified a C camera from cinema to content for creators and creatives. The 32.5MP full-frame camera offers 7K 60p RAW and 7K 30p Open Gate video. There is one CF Express card slot and one SD card slot on the unit (RAW and Open Gate filming require a CF Express card). Like the C50, you can view your vertical framing and your horizontal framing at the same time. Released alongside the camera is the 20-50mm F4 lens, designed with “creators in mind,” promising that it can be held for a selfie without hurting your wrist. Both the camera and lens were showcased during a “podcast recording” session in the release video. When the recording ended, so did the live stream. “Is that it?” questioned the YouTube chat, hoping for the price. It came later through press releases and articles: $2,499.00 in late June.

Not-so-far from Melville, Sony jumped into the new releases pool with a camera continuing “the story of R.” Promising that we will find that “resolution no longer slowing you down,” is the Sony A7R VI. Offering a 66.8 MP fully-stacked Exmor RS™ CMOS sensor, the camera offers Dual Gain shooting (“a first in the Alpha series”), 30fps pre-capture with no blackout shooting, and promises to capture “hidden textures fully revealed.” In terms of video, the unit offers 8K 30p recording with oversampling and full-frame 4K up to 120fps. 32-bit float audio recording internally is also available when using the new XLR adaptor, which is sold separately. Sony Product Manager Michael Bubolo shared that “we made this camera for you as much as we did me.” Regarding the 66.8MP sensor, Bubolo promised that for his son, he would of course say “6,7 megapixels.” That made the YouTube chat explode more than any other feature. The live audience responded the most to the illuminated rear panel buttons, something Bubolo shared he wanted for 13 years. Sony also released a new G Master series lens, the Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS. In a moment slightly reminiscent of the MacBook Air announcement from a manila envelope, the lens seems genuinely lighter and smaller than expected as Masanori Kishi posed for photos. The YouTube chat seemed to agree about the small size. Release date for the Sony A7R VI camera is available “the first week of June,” shared Bubolo. The press release confirmed a June 2026 release for the camera with an MSRP of $4.499.99 USD. The FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS has an MSRP of $4,299.99 and will be available in June 2026.
