The Tamron 12-20mm F2.8 features a compact and lightweight design paired with comprehensive control features to meet professional demands in a lens for astrophotography.

The defining feature of the 12-20mm F2.8 (Model A084) for full-frame mirrorless cameras is its ultra-wide focal range, starting at a remarkable 12mm. While 14mm or 16mm lenses are wide, the expansive 12mm perspective provides, Tamron says and anyone will agree, “an unparalleled sense of scale. It allows you to emphasize perspective and capture the world with dynamic intensity — ideal for everything from majestic architecture to vast, sweeping landscapes.”

 The overwhelming breadth of the 12mm perspective, enabling dynamic expression that seems to “capture the entire expanse of a scene” is paired with a bright F2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range. This lens is poised to become, according to Tamron, the “new protagonist” for astrophotography and interior shooting. 

It’s not hard to believe in the potential the new lens has, when one discovers that the optical system incorporates an XGM (eXpanded Glass Molded Aspherical) lens element, three GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lens elements, and multiple special lens elements. This design effectively suppresses peripheral blurring and color fringing while correcting sagittal coma flare — a common challenge in astrophotography — ensuring high sharpness from the center to the extreme edges of the frame. Because of the technical specifications above, Tamron adds that “whether you are shooting star-filled night skies or dimly lit interiors, this lens excels in every environment. 

Despite its “exceptional imaging performance”, Tamron says, “the lens achieves a sophisticated balance of size and weight, measuring just 119.3mm (4.7in) in length and weighing only 570g (20.2oz). While compact, it remains a professional-grade tool equipped with various switches and rings for superior operability.” 

For autofocus, the lens features the VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive), a high-speed, high-precision linear motor focus mechanism. Furthermore, with an MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of 0.18m (7.1in) at the 12mm wide end, the lens offers, Tamron claims, “outstanding close-up performance for creative versatility.” At its closest, you can get as near as 50mm (2in) from the front of the lens to your subject. 

The lens mount is equipped with a dedicated rear filter holder, allowing for the use of commercially available sheet-type filters. Users can simply cut a filter sheet to the required size and insert it into the holder for expanded creative control. It is useful for long-exposure photography. 

The 12-20mm F2.8 is compatible with the dedicated Tamron Lens Utility application, allowing you to assign practical functions for both video and still photography directly to the lens. This eliminates the need for external video equipment or previously required complex setups, streamlining your creative workflow and expanding your shooting possibilities.
