Driving Plates and Composites

in Premiere Pro and After Effects

Driving Plates is a Premiere Pro tutorial by Eran Stern that uses Artbeats driving plates as backgrounds for composites of actors driving a car. Driving plates (also known as process plates, car plates, or vehicle plates) are POVs shot simultaneously from multiple angles, and sold as individual clips or as sets.

You can avoid compositing altogether by shooting your own backgrounds, car or not. Smaller setups often won't invite unnecessary concern. There's some introductory information on How to shoot car videos inside & out here at PVC, with resources on inexpensive cameras, mounts, and post. There's a ton of driving plates stock footage available; here's another example, this time from Blue Sky Films:

Film Riot has advice on playing it safe, avoiding the streets, and getting shots comped in After Effects in Drive Fast Without Driving Fast! and Drive in a Car without Driving in a Car!

Also, see Crazy Driving! (backgrounder) and Advanced Soft Keying by Andrew Kramer in After Effects, which look to using compositing for finesse. The keying tutorial is quite good. If you want to skip actor close-ups, there's some 3D compositing tutorials for the AE plug-in Element 3D, Simple Car Rig in Element 3D! and 3D Truck Composite in Element 3D.
