In this latest Editors on Editing episode of the Art of the Frame podcast, Glenn Garland interviews editor Evan Schiff to discuss his work on Guillermo del Toro’s film Frankenstein, currently available on Netflix. Known for editing action-packed films like John Wick and Birds of Prey, Schiff talks through his experience as lead editor with del Toro, having previously worked with him as an assistant on Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy II. They discuss del Toro’s distinctive creative and editing processes, as well as del Toro’s involvement in the editing room.

With Frankenstein, the two talk through the film’s dual narrative structure, split between Victor Frankenstein’s pursuit of creation and the creature’s quiet, coming-of-age journey. Schiff outlined how the editing mirrors these contrasting tempos and emotional tones. He also discusses some of the film’s deleted material, transitions and sound design as key storytelling tools as well as what it took to achieve organic performances.
