From the moment it takes off, the A1 behaves differently. Instead of framing shots in the air, you’re essentially capturing everything at once. The dual-lens system—one facing up, one down—records a full spherical image, stitching it together in real time and removing the drone itself from the frame. The result is what feels like a true “invisible camera” floating through space.
That shift fundamentally changes how you approach shooting.
Rather than worrying about composition mid-flight, the focus becomes movement. You fly first, then decide later where the camera should be looking. In practice, that reframing workflow feels much closer to working with a 360 camera than a traditional drone, with the added benefit of full aerial freedom. Capturing in 8K provides enough resolution overhead to crop and deliver standard 16:9 frames without sacrificing quality.
What stands out on the show floor is how intuitive that experience becomes—especially when paired with the A1’s headset-first control system. Instead of a traditional dual-stick controller, the drone is operated using Vision goggles and a motion-based grip. You look where you want to go, and the drone follows, creating a more immersive, FPV-style interaction that feels closer to “piloting” than operating.
It’s a very different paradigm, and while it takes a few minutes to adjust, the learning curve is surprisingly shallow. For creators who have struggled with traditional drone controls, this could be one of the most accessible entry points into aerial cinematography yet.
Physically, the A1 also fits into a unique category. Weighing under 250 grams with the standard battery, it avoids many regulatory hurdles while still delivering professional-grade imaging capabilities. Flight times range from roughly 24 minutes to nearly 40 minutes depending on battery configuration, which puts it in line with many compact drones currently on the market.
But the real story here isn’t flight performance—it’s creative flexibility.
Because the camera captures everything, shots that would normally require precise piloting—or multiple takes—become far more forgiving. Complex moves, fast action, or unpredictable subjects can all be captured first and refined later. That opens the door to a different kind of shooting style, one that prioritizes spontaneity over precision.
Of course, that workflow comes with tradeoffs. Shooting in 360 means committing to a post-production process that includes reframing and rendering, which can add time compared to traditional footage. And the reliance on goggles-based control may not appeal to every operator, particularly those accustomed to more conventional flight systems.
Still, those tradeoffs feel intentional.
What Antigravity is proposing with the A1 isn’t just a new drone—it’s a new way of thinking about aerial capture. Instead of treating the drone as a camera platform, it becomes a data capture device, recording a complete environment that can be shaped later in post.
The takeaway from seeing the A1 at NAB this year is that aerial cinematography is starting to follow the same trajectory as other parts of the industry by capturing everything now and deciding later. After flying it, that approach feels less like a novelty and more like a glimpse of a future where flying a drone feels more like experiencing a moment than trying to capture it.
