I first used the term EDID in ProVideo Coalition in June 2011, nearly 15 years ago. I likely used it much earlier in Producción & Distribución and its sister magazine TTV, but I no longer have any feasible way to research that, since they were mainly print publications in that era. Before today, I had used EDID 23 times in ProVideo Coalition. In this 2026 article, I’ll remind you the meaning and usage of EDID, both with HDMI video monitors and HDMI cameras. Then I’ll clarify the meaning and usage of the similar but different term UVC Probe and Commit, since this one will likely be referenced in several upcoming articles and reviews of cameras and converters. This is because—just as EDID has been important when dealing with HDMI monitors and cameras in an ideal way, the newer UVC Probe and Commit is valuable with newer cameras and converters which use UVC over USB, some of which now rival mirrorless and HDSLR cameras with much less hassle and support our desired framerates. First, I will clarify that I personally did not invent or establish either of these two terms.

EDID

EDID stands for Extended Display Identification Data and it was established in August 1994 by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). It was introduced alongside the Display Data Channel (DDC) standard version 1, providing a 128-byte data structure for displays to communicate capabilities like resolution and color support to computers.

Key milestones in EDID development have included:

• 1996-1997 (EDID 1.1–1.2): Refined standards.
• 1999/2000 (E-EDID 1.3): Added support for multiple extension blocks.
• 2006 (E-EDID 1.4): Current standardized version.

Although most of the general coverage about EDID have been about monitors automatically negotiating the ideal spatial and temporal resolution (framerate) for a given situation with its video source, several of my own past articles have gone beyond that to include ways to manually override the EDID (when a monitor manufacturer sadly neglects to «advertise» certain valuable available framerates via EDID) and also ways to extract otherwise unavailable but desirable formats from certain HDMI cameras which have been otherwise unavailable via manual selection in the HDMI camera’s menu. Both of these methods have achieved getting more value from an HDMI monitor or camera than otherwise offered. For example:

• Some monitors which are perfectly capable of supporting some or all framerates like native 23.976p, 24.000p, 25.000p, 29.97p, 47.952p, 48.000p, 50p or 59.94p but don’t «advertise» all of them via EDID.
• Some cameras which are perfectly capable of offering framerates over HDMI like native 23.976p, 24.000p, 25.000p and 29.97p but don’t offer them via their menu.

UVC

Before defining UVC Probe and Commit, we should first define what UVC is:

UVC is the short name for USB video device class (aka USB video class), which refers to a classification that describes devices capable of streaming video like webcams, digital camcorders, transcoders, analog video converters, capture cards, and still-image cameras. The latest revision of the USB video class specification carries the version number 1.5 and was defined by the USB Implementers Forum in a set of documents describing both the basic protocol and the different payload formats. It is very important to understand that the available formats include:

• Uncompressed YUY2 (YUV 4:2:2)
• Uncompressed NV12 (YUV 4:2:0)
• Compressed formats like MPEG-2 TS, H.264, MPEG-4 SL, SMPTE VC1, VP8 and M-JPEG

UVC Probe and Commit

UVC Probe and Commit is not a separately established entity, but rather a core component of the UVC specification. Probe requests to check if a UVC device supports specific formats/rates, while Commit commands it to configure the device hardware with those settings. In practice, UVC Probe and Commit does virtually the same thing with UVC cameras as EDID has done with HDMI cameras. With each upcoming review of UVC cameras (as I often have done with HDMI cameras), I will clarify both the «advertised» and truly available formats and rates, since I have already found such discrepancies in at least one such camera I’ll be reviewing. In other words, a particular UVC camera I’ll be reviewing (which rivals mirrorless cameras) only advertises:

• 60 progressive frames per second
• 50 progressive frames per second
• 30 progressive frames per second
• 25 progressive frames per second

But can fortunately also deliver non-integer rates like 59.94p and 29.97p if requested via UVC Probe and Commit. History repeats itself, at least sometimes.
