With hundreds of careers and opportunities, the filmmaking industry can be a unique experience for a filmmaker. Options include pitching an idea, or a commission through screenwriting, casting, shooting, editing, and screening your project. Filmtools decided to take a deeper look into the world of a Filmmaker. This week, we had the opportunity to speak to Filmmaker Johannes Nannestad about his work. This is what he said:
Where are you from originally, and how did you get started?
Johannes Nannestad: I am from a small town on the south coast of Norway, called Arendal. But I first lived in Oslo, the capital of Norway. I started working with a small film crew as a teen, it kind of just snowballed from there. Took my first paid job as a 16 yeard old. That was the first commercial I did.
What inspires you?
Johannes Nannestad: I’m always looking into what other people do, either through social media or just around set. It always gives me a kick knowing that everyone is working to get better. If I’m on the film set I always know we all are working to get the best result.
Why did you choose this field?
Johannes Nannestad: I have wanted to be in the field since I saw a stunt performer at my school when I was younger. After she was done with her talk I looked into filmmaking. I came across behind the scenes footage, for the Norwegian film ” Max Manus, Man of War ” and I have never looked back since.
How does Filmtools help you?
Johannes Nannestad: I have worked with grip carts, camera cuts, and expendables from Filmtools on film sets throughout the last years. One of my favorite things to do on a weekend is to go over to your guy’s site and look at gear that I think is essential for shoots. That’s always a blast :).
What’s the coolest project you’ve worked on before?
Johannes Nannestad: I worked on a short here in Norway, it was one of the most challenging things I’ve done in my career. Everything went wrong, and we still got a decent short film out of it.
Do you have a piece of essential gear that you don’t leave without?
Johannes Nannestad: Well if you let out the camera gear, I have always had a special thing for light meters and lights. Knowing how to light my scene correctly, here the Sekonic are great and also, Filmtools provide a nice variety of gels and light, I use lots of them on different shoots.
What advice would you give to people interested in this industry?
Johannes Nannestad: Work hard and then some because if you are going to survive in this industry you gotta be on top of your game every single second.

What challenges have you faced in the film industry?
Johannes Nannestad: I find it hard to bring originality to all projects I do. I really want to try different styles, but a lot of things has already been done before. That also keeps me motivated to keep on working hard!
You walk onto the set, what three items do you bring with you?
Johannes Nannestad: I bring with me, a pocket knife, some of Filmtools great tape selection, and a Sekonic light meter.
