November is Black Friday season. The idea is so popular that many tend to forget that November is also the season of gratitude, the time of giving thanks. Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in the United States, and this year it occurs on Thursday, November 26. It’s a celebration that can be traced all the way back to 1621, when the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Native Americans shared an Autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies.

For more than two centuries, according to the History channel, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.

Black Friday’s history is shorter, but some trace it as far back as on September 24,1869, when a stock market catastrophe made the markets crash. There are different theories about how the actual Black Friday meaning, but two things most people know: it happens the day after the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, and is a day full of special shopping deals and heavy discounts. Many consider it as the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, with all the frenzy it brings to markets.

A Season of Thanks sale

Black Friday is now more than a day, it’s a whole period that runs from early or mid-November and extends until Cyber Monday and beyond. Cyber Monday is the Monday following Thanksgiving, promoted by online retailers as a day for exceptional bargains. The term was coined by Ellen Davis, of the National Retail Federation, and was first used within the ecommerce community during the 2005 holiday season. It is now used worldwide to refer to special sales online.

Despite the popularity of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, November continues to be a month of gratitude, the time of giving thanks. That explains why Teradek, SmallHD, and Wooden Camera are hosting a Season of Thanks sale between November 16th and November 30th this year. Here is what the company had to say about its initiative, when announcing it:
