In this episode of Editors on Editing, host Glenn Garland is joined by writer, director and editor Chloé Zhao and her editor, Alffonso Gonçalve To discuss their collaboration on the film Hamnet. The film, inspired by historical and literary themes, is noted for its creative editing and directing approach, as well as its emotional resonance. Zhao, known for her multifaceted roles in filmmaking, and Gonçalves, an accomplished editor with numerous nominations and awards, share insights into their collaborative process and stylistic choices.

The three discuss the intentional use of long takes and minimal coverage to build tension within single frames as well as the film’s visual composition, frequently described as “tableaux,” with single frames reminiscent of paintings. They also explore the experimental use of jump cuts and black frames as narrative tools to disrupt expectations and manipulate audience emotions.
