More than one person has pointed me toward the relatively new blog American Editor, written by Rob Ashe: Senior Video Editor & Opening Title Designer of Conan O’Brien’s most recent ventures among other items on a long resume. Rob is a straight shooter with a wry sense of humor, who dishes up some honest opinions and advice on working in The Industry.
Recent blogs include how to network to get work (“The reality is people need to be confident enough in you that they can lock you away in a room and you will turn out a great product”), putting the job in front of the tools (“what drives me crazy is when I show people photos and they tell me how good my camera is…how I have learned to use it is what is making the photos look half way decent”), and productivity (“you seem to be a very thoughtful person…this is a great personality trait, but I believe it can hurt you in the cutting room”).
They’re virtually required reading. And if you can’t remember to keep searching out his blog, then follow him on Facebook (and don’t forget to set your Home page to Most Recent – not just Top News, where Facebook decides what you really should read).
