With FiLMiC LOG V2 for FiLMiC Pro iPhone X rivals Blackmagic cameras

FiLMiC LOG V2

The new FiLMiC Pro LOG V2 delivers over 12 stops of dynamic range for newest iPhone X models, rivaling the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, says the company behind the product.

Confess that the lines above made you stop and reread again. If you’re a filmmaker and have one of the newest iPhone X models, iPhone XR, XS and XS Max, then this Christmas is really going to be special: FiLMiC just announced that the company achieved a a significant leap forward for mobile filmmakers with the launch of LOG V2 for FiLMiC Pro. It can, adds FiLMiC, elevate mobile filmmaking to rival professional cinematic cameras.

While some will argue that LOG does not make much sense in a smartphone, as you need more than 8 bits to make it work properly, FiLMiC believes otherwise, and has, in fact, invested a lot of time to create LOGV2. The company says it is “the culmination of years of work done on a proprietary computational-imaging module that we internally call “Cubiform”. Cubiform creates a mathematical environment where we can process the luma and chroma of an image with 64-bit precision.”

Read the technical overview

If you want to read the complete technical overview for iOS devices, visit FiLMiC’s website, where you’ll also find a technical overview of the Android implementation of LOG V2. Yes, LOG V2 (or Log V2, if you prefer) also works on most Android camera 2 API capable devices and is can be acquired as part of FiLMiC’s high end Cinematographer Kit. The flat and Log gamma curves in the Cinematographer Kit give filmmakers all the latitude they need for color grading data rich content for spectacular results, says the company.

As the lines between professional cinematic cameras and mobile devices continue to blur, LOG V2 for FiLMiC Pro elevates the mobile filmmaking experience, as said, by delivering up to 2.5 stops of additional dynamic range for mobile devices. LOG V2 enables the newest iPhone models mentioned above to exceed 12 stops of total dynamic range at base ISO. These results rival those of high-end cameras such as the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera and the Panasonic Lumix GH5s.

Free LUTs from FiLMiC Pro

Additionally, to further compliment the new LOG V2 curve, FiLMiC has increased the maximum target bitrate for 4k recording to 130Mbps on latest generation smartphones to deliver an even higher quality recording experience for mobile filmmakers. It’s probably the best Christmas gift mobile filmmakers using FiLMiC Pro could ask for.

FiLMiC also announced it is releasing a new professional LUT pack for use with its Cinematographer Kit, that give filmmakers the latitude they need to color grade data rich content for spectacular, cinematic results. With this announcement, FiLMiC is offering deFLAT and deLOG LUT packs free of charge and available on the FiLMiC site, at www.filmicpro.com/luts.

The new FiLMiC Pro LUT Pack uses the .cube format which ensures its compatibility with Adobe Premiere, Apple Final Cut Pro X and Davinci Resolve, and other industry standard editing solutions for the desktop. The FiLMiC deFLAT and deLOG LUTs are also pre-bundled with LumaFusion and VideoLUT apps for iOS. By partnering with leading iOS editing apps like LumaFusion and VideoLUT, FiLMiC will radically simplify advanced color grading on mobile devices for filmmakers and editors. A single click will conform their LOG to the beautiful rec.709 color space while still giving them additional dynamic range.
