I had a few rounds of email events with their Tech Support. I even had to diplomatically scold them for sending me inaccurate information about their own product in their initial response, after which they escalated the issue, acknowledged their error and apologized. Then, I finally got the proper information and got it to work. If you read the title of this article, you know I’m talking about being able to monitor the audio live via headphones from the tiny DJI Mobile RX (receiver). This is something not mentioned in the DJI advertising, but hidden in the documentation with extremely few details. Ahead, you will hear my test recording, made with a DJI Mic Mini which came with the 2 TX + 1 Mobile RX package I purchased for only US$45 pretax. However, this is not a full review of the entire device, but a narrowly focused review of its live audio monitoring capability and how to achieve it. Every since I reviewed the RØDE Wireless Micro almost two years ago in November 2024 (with the help of Memo Sauceda), I loved the high quality together with the extremely compact USB-C docking mount to a smartphone or tablet, but I missed the capability of live audio confidence monitoring to complement the onscreen visual confidence with that RØDE system. That’s why I was seeking something similar, but including that missing feature. I found it with this DJI 2 TX + 1 Mobile RX after I learned the necessary details. However, I hope that DJI (or some other manufacturer) will improve two details with a future development.

The above test recording was done using the DJI 2 TX + 1 Mobile RX, which contains two tiny transmitters and one tiny receiver, set to «stereo» mode. I made a «fake stereo» (dual mono) recording with the RØDE Reporter (Android) app at WAV 48 kHz/24-bit. Later, I separated the two stereo tracks into individual mono WAV tracks at 48 kHz/24-bit for upload to Auphonic for processing (elimination of crosstalk, reverb, noise and much more) as covered in prior articles about Auphonic. The actual recording, I made during the forum (FAQ session) after the Uruguayan theatrical play Zombi Monifiesto, which was one of the several taking place this month in the 40th Hispanic Theater Festival in Miami, Florida.

Solving the mystery to get live audio monitoring from the DJI Mobile receiver

The DJI Mobile Receiver (Mobile RX) indeed has a USB-C output for live monitoring, but it is incompatible with all modern USB-C earphones, headphones or headsets. That means that it is completely incompatible with the Apple wired USB-C EarPods I recently covered in Review: Apple wired USB-C EarPods for remote audio guests-with Descript Studio Sound in post-production. The reason for the incompatibility is because modern USB-C earphones and headphones all contain a DAC (digital-to-analog converter and the headsets (with a built-in mic) also have an ADC (analog-to-digital converter).

The monitoring feature offered by the DJI Mobile receiver (Mobile RX) will only work with pure analog devices. In other words, it must be a USB-C earphone, headphone, headset or adapter without any DAC or ADC built-in. This is called an Analog Transmission USB-C Connection, without any chip.

In 2026, I could not find any such earphone, headphone or headset. Apparently, they stopped being manufactured about eleven years ago. However, we can still get a passive converter, although they are very rare. I could not find any from Amazon, B&H or even Filmtools.

The only one I was able to find is the Sanoxy USB-C Type C to 3.5mm Aux Audio Jack Passive. The key word here is passive, meaning no conversion, no chip. I was only able to find it from Target in the United States. It cost US$13.99 plus tax and shipping. It’s available in black or gold color. I chose the gold color to differentiate it from other (active) USB-C to 3.5 TRRS adapters I already had, which don’t work with the DJI Mobile RX.

Why would DJI use a USB-C connector instead of a TRS 3.5 mm connector on the DJI Mobile Receiver (Mobile RX)?

I did not ask this question of DJI Tech Support, but the reason is clear to me: A typical female USB-C receptacle has a depth of approximately 6.20 mm, whereas a typical female 3.5 mm TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) audio jack has an insertion depth/mating length of roughly 11.5 mm to 14.0 mm, with the overall physical barrel length reaching up to 17 mm. This means it’s almost triple in depth. The total length of the DJI Mobile Receiver (Mobile RX) is currently 39.26 mm, so using a female TRS jack would have required making it much longer. So we can pardon them for using the USB-C for analog only. However, I wish they documented it better.

What is the quality of the live monitoring output?

I connected my current favorite isolating stereo headphones to the Sanoxy USB-C Type C to 3.5mm Aux Audio Jack Passive. My current favorite isolating stereo headphones are the RØDE NTH-100, reviewed in 2022. The quality of the live monitoring output from the DJI Mobile Receiver (Mobile RX) is quite poor, for two reasons:

  1. This live monitoring output from the DJI Mobile Receiver (Mobile RX) is of very low fidelity, sounding as if the source were a carbon microphone from the oldest landline phones, even though the quality of the microphone inside the DJI Mini transmitter is a high-quality condenser mic.
  2. There is substantial latency.

Requests to DJI

  1. Please make the live monitoring output of the DJI Mobile Receiver (Mobile RX) be higher quality, either via a firmware update or via a newer product in the future.
  2. Please make the live monitoring output of the DJI Mobile Receiver (Mobile RX) have a much lower latency, either via a firmware update or via a newer product in the future.
