This two-part video presentation looks behind the scenes at two different building projection projects – a small scale production for New Year’s Eve in Melbourne, Australia, and a large scale event for the Alfa Bank in Russia – the largest building projection ever staged to date. In part 2 we take a detailed look at the After Effects workflow used to create the animations for the Melbourne projections, and how the ZBorn Toy and Freeform plugins were used.

Spinifex is the Sydney animation company that produced the content for the Russian Alfa Bank project. They have also worked extensively on high-profile projections around the world, including a few Olympic Games opening ceremonies.
ZBorn Toy is currently sold by Frischluft, who are also well known for their exceptional “Lenscare” products. Frischluft kindly donated a license for ZBorn Toy to us for this project.

Freeform is currently developed by Mettle software – I accidentally refer to “Forge Freeform” at one point in the video which only shows my age. Unfortunately Freeform will no longer be bundled with After Effects CS6, however Mettle have made significant improvements to Freeform since we used it, and Freeform2 is up to 8 times faster. Their upcoming product – Freeform Pro – is not only 20x faster than the version of Freeform that we used, but it also casts shadows! Looking forward to the release of it soon… (on the Mac – it’s out for Windows)
