The making of a music video in Spain, including crowdsourcing of B-roll

iloud_singing_640.jpg

For her latest music video, where the main shots were shot on a beach in Valencia, Spain, singer/songwriter Sole Giménez crowdsourced the B-roll shots via social media. Ahead are production details, including cameras, directors, editors, and graders.

Above you’ll see the final video for Cómo hemos cambiado (How we’ve changed)

This is the main song for Sole Giménez’s latest album of the same name, which is available from Amazon.

I love it when “bookends” are added to music videos, and I was happy to see that they were used in this case. I am referring to the addition of an intro to the video which were not part of the original song. This is the first time I have ever seen crowdsourcing used for B-roll, where synced clips from Sole Giménez’s fans were requested via social media and then edited into a professionally produced video.

Directors, editors, and grader

On the beach scenes, the director of photography for the Cómo hemos cambiado (How we’ve changed) video was in the hands of Ciro Selma. For the “bookends” the director of photography was Pablo van Damme, who was also the editor and grader.

Equipment and software used

For the beach scenes, a Canon 5D Mark III, a Canon 7D (Dan Carr of ProVideo Coalition recently covered the Mark II version, as did José Antunes in his article, also in ProVideo Coalition) and a Sony Alpha 300 with a digital gyroscope. As I often recommend to consulting clients, the audio playback for the beach scenes was done using a special 48 kHz version of the song, and played back via a battery-powered active speaker.

(I wasn’t able to get the exact model, and therefore am not certain whether it was possibly the iLoud from IK Multimedia I recently reviewed.)

Given that the beach scene was shot in Spain, I was not at all surprised to learn that the footage was shot in 1920×1980 at 25p (progressive frames per second), as did the spot I was involved in a spot in Miami for use in Europe in 2011, as covered in this article: Panasonic AF100 joins forces with Sony encoder for 25p Euro spot in Miami

For the Cómo hemos cambiado music video in Spain, Pablo van Damme did the post production with Premiere Pro with After Effects. Pablo did the grading with DaVinci Resolve.

Interview with the singer

Below you’ll have access to the interview I did with Sole Giménez, the singer/songwriter featured in the video in the latest episode of my CapicúaFM podcast.

The details of how I produced this episode are available in this recent article: Amadeus Pro, Audio Hijack, Sole Giménez and CapicúaFM.

My latest book (paperback + ebook)

My most recent book is available in two languages, and in paperback as well as an ebook. The ebook format is Kindle, but even if you don’t have a Kindle device, you can read Kindle books on many other devices using a free Kindle app. That includes iPad, Android tablets, Mac computers, and Windows computers. Although generally speaking, Kindle books are readable on smartphones like Androids and iPhones, I don’t recommend it for this particular book since it contains both color photos and color comparison charts. The ebook is also DRM-free.
