The market for apps to allow Mac and Android to talk offers a series of options, from MacDroid, which we mentioned here back in 2020, to solutions as AirDroid, Syncios, Android File Transfer, the official app from Google, or HandShaker, offering different ways to connect – over USB or Wi-Fi – and different levels of complexity, so users can choose the app that best suits their needs… and pocket.
MacDroid, which was mentioned here at PVC, has evolved a lot and is considered one of the best choices, while Google’s Android File Transfer has apparently died, as Google promotes QuickShare, which has limited Mac compatibility, and has not updated Android File Tansfer and many Mac users report compatibility problems with recent versions of macOS software.
We wrote, back in 2020, that MacDroid allows users to mount Android as a disk on Mac, and both internal and external storages of Android can be mounted. You’ll only need MacDroid and an Android connected to Mac via USB, and MacDroid supports all Android and MTP devices. Single-Operation Mode ( MTP) offers and easy and comprehensive way to connect not just your Android, but other supported devices as well. MacDroid also works in Multi-Operation Mode (ADB), a multiplex mode for a faster file transfer and management. The app requires macOS 10.10 or newer.
MacDroid continues to be updated regularly and in 2024 the team behind it added the ability to connect Android devices and transfer files via Wi-Fi, along with a series of other important features. The app, which latest release, MacDroid 2.10.1206, from June 2026, is available in two versions, Free and MacDroid PRO.
Now another player comes to the market: ProDroid – Android Explorer, a new Mac–Android transfer utility, developed by Aravind Chowdary, a developer that been developing native Android and iOS apps for 4+ years “and publishing a few good ones to the appstores”, a list that includes, for Android, Handbrake.pro, to compress videos fast, reduce file size, convert format to mp4, or Find That Photo, that promises to put an end to the chaos of your image archive.
For iOS, the developer has released VideoComnpressor – Tiny Video, a self-explaining name, apps to help you keep fit or one app, Bhagavad Gita – Life & Purpose, “your intelligent guide to the timeless wisdom of Bhagavad Gita”, a free app for iPhone that serves as a reminder that there are more things in the world than tech.
ProDroid – Android Explorer, which was released a few months ago, requires Apple Silicon Masd, macOS 14.6 or later and an Android device that supports USB file transfer (MPT). The developer added that the app costs $5.
