OLED field monitor upgradable to become a recorder? Enter the Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q 1

Long time ProVideo Coalition readers know that I have been covering external progressive 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 recorders from different manufacturers for years. Several more recent recorder models I have covered have included a built-in LCD screen to double as a field monitor. Now, thanks to Convergent Design, we have the option of portable OLED field monitors which can be upgraded at any time to become a recorder with compressed video, uncompressed video, and even RAW. It all starts at US$1295. Details ahead.

In the following promotional video, Convergent Design describes how their prior and existing products naturally gave rise to the new Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q monitor/recorders.

As described in the video, the letter Q stands for Quad and allows for recording up o four simultaneous streams. I really applaud Convergent Design for including a waveform monitor (in addition to zebras, histogram, vectorscope, and false color). I understand zebras and false color as a supplement to the waveform monitor, but I haven’ still learned to read a histogram. I still prefer the waveform monitor, probably because I learned video and TV engineering way before Photoshop became popular. The Odyssye7 also offers focus assist, timecode display, and audio level meters, and 1:1 pixel mode.

According to Convergenlit Design’s press release, recording options will include uncompressed HD/2K RGB 4:4:4 (up to 60p), 2K/HD Raw, ARRIRAW (full 16:9 and 4:3 support), and Canon 4K RAW.

I hope to interview Convergent Design at NAB and determine full price info, as well as verify whether it offers the option to treat 1080i signals as PsF, for all of the cameras that shoot 1080/25p or 1080/29.97p but unfortunately output interlaced over HDMI or HD-SDI.
