At the Mobile World Congress, in 2025, both Xiaomi and Realme introduced their projects to use interchangeable lenses for smartphones, an idea that has been around for years: using external lenses to get better quality images and video from a smartphone. It’s nothing new, the most popular project being Sony’s QX series, which included four models, the QX1, QX10 and QX30 and QX100, the Smart Lens series, designed to be used with a smartphone. With a 20.2 megapixels, 1-inch sensor paired with a 28-100mm ƒ/1.8 / ƒ/4.9 Carl ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* lens, the lens was compatible with both Android and iOS. We wrote an article about the subject, which you can read following the link above.
The base version of the smartphone, Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max (the ProMax designation is now the trend name for flagship smartphones) is still a very capable model: it features a triple rear camera setup, with a 50MP main camera (24mm) with variable aperture (f/1.4-f/4.0), a 200MP periscope telephoto (89mm f/2.6) which presents a 4x optical zoom, and a 40MP ultrawide (13mm f/2.2). The phone supports 4K video recording and includes a 13MP ultrawide selfie camera with autofocus.
