Cloud Review/Collaboration with Frame.io

This week on MacBreak Studio, Steve Martin from Ripple Training hosts returning guest Sam Mestman. In this episode, Sam demonstrates the new Frame.io collaboration/review platform and its tight integration with Final Cut Pro X.

Frame.io consists of both a local app and a web-based platform. Use of the local app is completely optional, and it allows you to export projects, project ranges, and individual clips directly from Final Cut Pro to the Frame.io platform, because it adds a Share destination directly to the menu. Selecting this destination automatically launches the app, where you can make additional choices (if you don’t use the app, you can upload exported movies by a simple drag and drop). If you are exporting a timeline, you can use markers to indicate specific clips to be included or excluded.

While the video focuses on the local app, the web-based collaboration platform is beautifully designed, easy to use, and incredibly functional. We are already using it extensively at Ripple Training as our primary review tool for tutorial movies. Collaborators can view movies and add notes as they watch that are automatically timecode stamped so it’s easy for the editor to see these notes directly in context simply by clicking on the note to jump to that section of the video. Reviewers can even draw on the screen to point things out, similar to Skitch’s functionality. I’d love to be able to add text as well. Versions get tracked, and as the editor completes task notes, he can mark them “done” and they appear with strike-throughs.

You can create folders to organize larger projects, choose collaborators, skim the thumbnails, and more. The lowest tier is free, with paid plans for more project. It’s an exciting new product and we look forward to additional features as it develops.
