Blackmagic didn’t quite remove the Band-Aid after all… 1

In June 2014, I published an article stating that Blackmagic had finally removed the Band-Aid for original DreamColor monitor users, based upon information published in their own ReadMe and a direct statement from Blackmagic’s US president, which I quoted. In mid August, I went to Guatemala to configure a system, and discovered that RGB over HDMI wasn’t really available. After a few weeks of email exchanges, Blackmagic has finally clarified their position via the public relations department.

  1. RGB capture (over HDMI) is supported in (Blackmagic's Desktop Video version) 10.1.1 and newer.
  2. RGB output (over HDMI) support is being worked on, but we don’t have a timeframe for when that will be available yet.

Since it took several weeks for me to receive this response, I suspect that there was much internal discussion.

The bottom line is that all current Blackmagic products still require the Band-Aid for use with the original DreamColor monitor. The new DreamColor monitors announced at 2014 no longer demand RGB, but it is still better to send them RGB when doing serious grading (if available), for reasons explained in this November 2012 article.

My latest book (paperback + ebook)

My most recent book is available in two languages, and in paperback as well as an ebook. The ebook format is Kindle, but even if you don’t have a Kindle device, you can read Kindle books on many other devices using a free Kindle app. That includes iPad, Android tablets, Mac computers, and Windows computers. Although generally speaking, Kindle books are readable on smartphones like Androids and iPhones, I don’t recommend it for this particular book since it contains both color photos and color comparison charts. The ebook is also DRM-free.
