Quick Notes: ETE Panel; MTE Open House

Quick Notes: ETE Panel; MTE Open House 3

Quick Notes: ETE Panel; MTE Open House 1

Meets The Eye’s Studio A during its first production.

Next week I’ll be involved in two public events, one in Burbank (a panel on production technology) and the other in San Carlos CA (our shooting stages open house). Come by to visit, to ask questions, to complain, or to throw things. Also: what’s in the pipeline after that.

2 November: ETE PVC Panel

On Wednesday, 2 November, I’ll be at the Entertainment Technology Expo in Burbank. I’m on a panel 1:30pm-3pm with a bunch of other PVC writers, talking about tech that’s changed our world this year, and what the future holds (spoiler: more new stuff!).

Come on by to listen, to ask questions, and/or to heckle. Admission is free, but you have to sign up. The expo runs Wednesday and Thursday, and there’s lots of stuff to see aside from us.

I’m only at ETE on Wednesday, because the next day I need to be back in the SF Bay Area for the MTE Open House.

3 November: MTE Open House

Meets The Eye is the small movie-production startup I’ve been at for four years. We’ve been embroiled in studio construction for what sometimes seems to be forever, because we can’t be a proper movie-production company unless we have our own studio. Besides, we can rent shooting stages to other folks and generate income, which is a handy thing to have in uncertain times.

Having finally bashed our stages into some semblance of usability, we’re showing ’em off. We’re having an open house and grand opening party 2pm-9pm on Thursday, 3 November (yes, the same day as the Canon and Scarlet announcements; good things come in threes), with food, drink, and a Lightcraft Previzion demo. I’ll probably be driving the Previzion most of the day.

One of our RED ONEs wired with Previzion lens encoders, tracking camera, and Airtrack gyro.

Also, I am told, we’ll have a theremin player. I am not making this up.

If you’re in the area—San Carlos, halfway between San Francisco and San Jose—come on by and say “hi”. Full details and a signup form here. If you plan to come, please sign up (soon, please); that’s how we know how much food to get.

Now how much would you pay? But wait, there’s more!

Then, Saturday 5 November, I’m back down to LA for the big Canon event at Paramount; apparently the 3rd is the black-tie announcement, and the 4th and 5th are when plebeians such as myself can see what all the fuss is about. Full report to follow.

After that, I have an NEX-FS100 due in for review, and two new Panasonics coming a few weeks later. Stay tuned…

Disclaimers:

This is where I’m supposed to tell you how materially unconnected I am with the events discussed; how pure as the driven snow am I, so that you know you can trust me. Not this time, buddy! I’m in it right up to the eyeballs: this is the Shameless Commerce Edition of Camera Log!

How, you ask?

1) ETE is put on by Createasphere, the publisher of this very website; darned right there’s a material connection. If they make money on the show, they can continue to pay us pixel-stained wretches. Conflicts of interest? I think not: our interests in this case are perfectly aligned!

2) Likewise with Meets The Eye: I work at MTE; MTE pays my salary (it’s not like writing for ‘net is going to fund my lavish lifestyle). No, MTE didn’t pay me extra to stay up late promoting the Open House on PVC, but it’s in my best interest to promote the studio: if someone reading this post comes to the Open House and subsequently rents a stage for a day or two, MTE makes some money and I get to keep my job!

Having said that, both Canon and Lightcraft remain unsullied by this sordid commercialism. I own a Canon camera and lenses I’ve purchased with my own money, and MTE purchased a Previzion system with MTE’s own money, but aside from the happy-customer bit, no material connection exists between me and Canon or Lightcraft: no considerations, emoluments, or other blandishments were proffered to encourage a mention of either company or its products in this article.
