NAB 2013: Átomos expands Connect converter line with CONNECT-AC; lowers prices 1

Back in October 2012, I published a review of the Connect H2S (HDMI>SDI converter) from Átomos (link ahead), which includes onboard pulldown removal and a test pattern generator. The original H2S and S2H include a battery, charger, and external AC power supply. Now at NAB 2013, Átomos lowered the prices of both the original Connect H2S and the original S2H to US$295, while expanding the Connect converter line to include the new AC-only versions with internal AC supply, without battery capability, aimed primarily for fixed facility use, at the same lower price. Ahead I’ll clarify the pulldown removal differences.

In October 2012, I published this two-page review: The H2S makes self-sabotaged HDMI cameras work as they should in a progressive multicam environment. In that article, I focused on its unique pulldown removal capability, both 2:2 and 2:3 (aka 3:2).

Do the new CONNECT-AC models have pulldown removal?

I went to the Átomos booth at NAB, and that is the first question I asked, after greeting our friends there. I asked because this information was not mentioned in the press release or on the website. The initial answer was “no”, but I am glad I persisted. As it turns out, the product designer confirmed that the new CONNECT-AC models do have 2:2 pulldown removal capability, but not 2:3 (aka 3:2). So if you run your HDMI studio cameras at 25p or 29.97p, you can use either the original H2S model (which comes with a battery, charger, and external AC power supply) or the new CONNECT-AC (which contains its AC power supply). However, if you run your HDMI studio cameras at 23.976p (often rounded to “23.98p” or even “24p”) or at exact 24.000p (available in very few HDMI cameras), then you must still choose the original H2S model.

What other similarities and differences exist between the original and CONNECT-AC models?

There are many more similarities than differences. In both cases, H2S converts HDMI to SDI, or S2H converts SDI to HDMI. All four include a test pattern generator, timecode & start/stop trigger pass-through, and SDI re-clocking. Only the new AC-Connect series offers an optional rack-mount, which can hold up to four converters.
