This accessory is not a microphone, nor does it include any microphone. The first time I ever saw this type of an accessory was with RØDE’s US$29 Inverview GO, a handle for wireless transmitters which have a built-in mic. Later, RØDE introduced a smaller one, called the Interview Micro, at the same US$29 price. Now, there are many brands and a spectrum of prices from US$12 and up. Most of them include a windscreen, and some include two or three of them. Some of those included windscreens are pre-branded by their respective manufacturer, while others come unbranded, and potentially brandable. Some of these Lav Mic Handles even include a cube for branding purposes, although those who have read my past coverage of branded windscreens know their many advantages over those cubes. Despite those advantages, some may prefer the cubes for nostalgic reasons.
These different models seem to have more similarities than differences. I chose one called Fukaisu Y37009 which cost under US$12 pretax and includes two unbranded windscreens (one of which could become branded). Fortunately, I didn’t have to use either of them since the most recent CapicúaFM branded windscreen I had made happens to fit well onto it, as you’ll see below.
My first public usage of the Fukaisu Lav Mic Handle was with the recording you may already heard in this recent article, called DJI Mic Mini (2 TX + 1 Mobile RX) live monitoring adventure for complete audio confidence! On that occasion, I had to use it (as a representative of CapicúaFM) to do a small interview after a theatrical play, during the 40th Hispanic Theatre Festival in Miami.
Conclusions
I am very glad that these accessories exist and are so affordable, since they really do convert wireless lav mics into proper handheld mics for informal field interviews.
