Grass Valley Provides Thought Leadership on Advanced Compression Technology at NAB 2010 Conference

Experts from Grass Valley™ will be presenting two papers as part of the Broadcast Engineering Conference at NAB 2010. Each addresses key issues for the future of broadcasting, looking at how the latest advances in video compression algorithms can double the number of HD channels in an ATSC environment, and how it can bring the unrivalled quality of 1080p to the home.

3Gb/s workflows, for 1080 line progressive high-definition television (1080p50/60), is still in its infancy, although broadcasters are keen to provide the highest possible quality to the home to compete with Blu-ray and games consoles. These very high bitrate signals need careful compression for contribution (backhaul) circuits, storage and distribution, and in a session on Tuesday, April 13 at 3:30pm in room S228, Are Olafsen, Director of Satellite Headend Solutions for Grass Valley, will discuss the choice of codecs and wrappers for creating a 3G content workflow for delivering a new level in high-definition quality.

With US broadcasters mandated to use MPEG-2 over ATSC to provide all over-the-air transmissions, the accepted norm has been one high-definition and one or two standard-definition channels, as this has been all that the bandwidth will accept. With households increasingly using large flat panel displays, the standard definition channels provide an unsatisfactory viewing experience, so there is considerable interest in broadcasting two HD channels in the same bandwidth. Jean-Louis Diascorn, Product Manager for encoders at Grass Valley will present how new generation HD encoders can achieve this by harnessing the full power of the MPEG-2 compression scheme. Diascorn’s paper is at 2:30pm on Wednesday, April 14 in room S228.

Both sessions will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

As well as presenting this leading edge research in the conference, Grass Valley will be showing practical demonstrations of the technology on booth SL106, in the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. The NAB 2010 exhibition is open from April 12-15.
