In CapicúaFM podcast episode 109, María Esnoz and I covered the topic of Foolproof accented domains (including ñ) or in the original Castilian: Dominios tildados (o con ñ) a prueba de todo. In the process, the sidekick character I covered back in January 2026 (Creating a Little-Johnny type character for radio & podcast shows: image + voice) almost pronounced a Castilian palabrota on air, one which would have certainly appeared on George Carlin‘s 1972 list of the Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television(or radio), if George had also spoken the language of Cervantes, in addition to English. After debunking the three most common unjustifiable objections to accented domains (or with the ñ character), we demonstrated the foolproof method used by our Dominiostildados.com (or AccentedDomains.com), with examples you can immediately test yourself. For example, if you enter the misspelled CapicuaFM.com domain (without the accent mark) in the browser, it snaps instantly to the accented version CapicúaFM.com and appears properly in the URL field, «like magic».
Some well-known brands which include accent marks, even in English:
- Bacardí
- Café Bustelo
- Citroën (with an umlaut, aka diéresis, which is also usable with domains)
- Häagen-Dazs (with an umlaut, aka diéresis, which is also usable with domains)
- McCafé
- Mötley Crüe (with an umlaut, aka diéresis, which is also usable with domains)
- Nescafé
- Nestlé
We gave other examples with domains which contain the ñ character, which is even used in several terms in English, including jalapeño, piñata, the weather terms El Niño & La Niña and even the popular drink, the piña colada. The two actual working examples we gave were: If you enter the misspelled domain AbrunaandMusgrave.com in the browser, it snaps instantly to AbruñaandMusgrave.com, or if you enter RubenAbruna.com, it snaps instantly to RubénAbruña.com. These two examples prove how important this concept is, even with websites where the content is in English. These two ñ examples are both TecnoTur clients and faithful listeners of CapicúaFM.
We explained that the «magic» is accomplished by purchasing the pair of both the plain and the accented domain, and then creating a 301 Redirect from the first to the second. Only one hosting is needed (for the accented or ñ domain), and everything works wonderfully from an SEO perspective with browsers like Google and Bing. Then, María asked me if she hypothetically were to purchase the pair of campana.com (where campana means bell) and compaña.com (where campaña means campaign), whether anyone who entered campana.com would instantly reach campaña.com. I responded affirmatively, as long as both domains were available for purchase. At that point, our sidekick «Jaimito» suddenly got the naughty idea to purchase the pair of domains with cono.com and the matching one with an ñ. Just before he pronounced the second syllable of the naughty term, María was able to cover his mouth at the last millisecond and scold him, telling him that there are words not appropriate to say on the air.
Finally, María asked me whether there is any limitation with this combination of domains. I responded to her that so far, we have had great results with domains from the following TLDs (top-level domains): .com, .soy and .video. The only ones where we had difficulty have been with the .us (which still doesn’t offer accented domains), .tv, .org and .es, since these last three have a homoglyphophobic policy since they are apparently afraid of selling the pair, so even after confirming availability two minutes before making a purchase of both domains simultaneously, one of the two desired domains is sold and the other one is now frozen and no longer available for anyone. The registrar in charge of the .es TLD is called Red.es (located in Madrid, Spain). Sadly, Red.es has not responded to my multiple requests for comment via their official Press email address so far. My messages to Red.es have never bounced, just no response so far, after several weeks, even though the email I used to send my request fully complies with all SPF, DKIM and DMARC requirements. I explained that they (Red.es) can potentially get double revenue every time someone buys an accented domain together with the plain one. I even offered Red.es a courtesy interview to discuss this topic publicly on CapicúaFM. I hope Red.es will accept that invitation soon.
I understand the reason behind their homoglyphophobia: These domain registries are afraid of potential copycats, but in my humble opinion, banning the sale of accented domain pairs alongside their unaccented counterparts is just as absurd as banning the sale of knives. Knives can be used for good (for example, for cooking or eating) or for evil. Fortunately, the sale of knives has not been banned. There is fortunately no such restriction on .com, .soy, or .video domains, and we can purchase their associated domain pairs, as long as no one else owns them first. We’ll keep this information up to date on our Dominiostildados.com (or AccentedDomains.com) web page.
