FiLMiC Pro reaches Android after years on iOS 2

For those unfamiliar, FiLMiC Pro is a renowned under US$10 app for iOS (iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch) and now certain Android models that allows setting the desired framerate (instantly turning the device into a worldcam), locking focus & exposure, recording bitrate, proper 48 kHz and more. During 2015, the FiLMiC Pro team completely redesigned the app for iOS 9. Details and video samples ahead.

Above is the current FilMiC Pro sizzle reel. All footage was shot with an iPhone or iPad using the FiLMiC Pro app.

Review of framerates situation on iOS (at least)

I know that on iOS (iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch), framerates are variable, not exact. This means that the framerate settings are only targets. When you use the native Camera app in iOS, it shoots at ±30p. When you shoot with the settings of 24, 25, 30, 50 or 60p using FiLMiC Pro, it is actually doing ±24, ±25, ±30, ±50 or ±60p. As long as you manually create a project in the desired framerate in Adobe Premiere CC, Apple Final Cut Pro X or even iMovie (using the trick covered in this article), the editing program will make your variable framerate footage become your desired 23.976p, 24p, 25p, 29.97p (or even 50p or 59.94p with all of the precautions I wrote in iPhone 6s: One more reason to distribute video under 30 fps) as soon as you render out the project. Even if you think there is an audio/video sync problem when editing, there is not. It is automatically corrected upon rendering. This is simply the current nature of iOS video recording, and there is no problem with it as long as you understand it and handle it properly in post. I suspect the same situation to exist with Android video recordings.

FiLMiC Pro 5 for Android

In January 2015, I covered a similar app for Android in First look: Cinema FV–5 for Android, similar to FiLMiC Pro for iOS. Now, almost a year later, I am glad to know that Android content producers also have the option of the The real McCoy, and we can compare them.

FiLMiC Pro v5.0 for Android is now available on the Google Play store for just under US$10 or an equivalent amount in your local currency.

The FiLMiC Pro team states:

Our Android release is the culmination of many months of hard work by our development team and our beta testers. Android is a dynamic but challenging platform to develop a product like ours. Our initial offering is for devices running Lollipop and higher operating systems and that fully support Android’s Camera2 api. Camera2 is a more full-featured OS support for a device’s camera controls and allows us to offer the broadest array of functional support befitting the FiLMiC Pro label. For more information on Camera2 support and why it matters we suggest this article from SpectraStudy at the time of last year’s Mobile World Congress.

The current list of devices that adhere to this level of support are as follows:

The FiLMiC Pro team believes that 2016 should be a vibrant year for Android growth, and quotes rumors that Google will enforce new requirements on the minimum API and hardware support for devices on their platform.

As we continue our Android development we will look to broaden our support for more devices and will monitor closely the plans that Google has in store for their platform as well as the offerings of the Android hardware community. Our Android release is in keeping with FiLMiC’s philosophy to democratize filmmaking, mobile journalism and videography. We look forward to see what the FiLMiC Android community will bring to the world.

They also say that there will be major improvements in the iOS version in 2016 too.

My latest book (paperback + ebook)

My most recent book is available in two languages, and in paperback as well as an ebook. The ebook format is Kindle, but even if you don’t have a Kindle device, you can read Kindle books on many other devices using a free Kindle app. That includes iPad, Android tablets, Mac computers, and Windows computers. Although generally speaking, Kindle books are readable on smartphones like Androids and iPhones, I don’t recommend it for this particular book since it contains both color photos and color comparison charts. The ebook is also DRM-free.

In English, it’s The Castilian Conspiracy. Click here and you will be automatically sent to the closest Amazon book page to you based upon your IP address. Or request ISBN–10: 1456310232 or ISBN–13: 978–1456310233 in your favorite local bookstore.
