
Conventional display emitters such as quantum dots (QDs) fall short of achieving the Rec.2020 color gamut—a key benchmark for next-generation displays, but a South Korean company wants to change that with its own technology. SN Display claims that its perovskite color conversion film, based on perovskite nanocrystals, overcomes the limitations of conventional quantum dots, “by delivering ultra-high color purity and achieving over 95% Rec.2020 coverage, compared to approximately 76% with QD technologies.”
The breakthrough came in 2014, when Lee’s team produced perovskite as nanoscale crystals. That discovery, which was patented in 2014 and published in 2015, laid the foundation for display technology based on perovskites that promise to outperform other display technologies.
In the article mentioned above Tae-Woo Lee, head of the display technology company SN Display based in Seoul, South Korea, says: “I became fascinated with perovskites the first time I saw the luminescence from a perovskite emitter. The purity of the colours was stunning — I had never seen anything like it. From that moment, my goal has been to commercialize perovskites as the foundation for next-generation display technology.”
Perovskite light-emitting materials are, according to SN Display, the ultimate solution that can meet the tough color space standards (Rec. 2020.) required for UHD displays. PeNC is also the only candidate in current light emitters capable of realizing high pixel resolution over 3,000 PPI, for immersive AR/VR displays with wide viewing angles of 120 degrees and more, which fits Rec. 2020 standard and provide sufficient brightness. According to SN Display, “for conventional inorganic quantum dots, the low light absorption due to its small size requires a thick color conversion layer, and the resolution patterning limits their application in ultra-small AR/VR devices.”
Designed for durability, the perovskite color conversion film maintains performance under high temperature and humidity, meeting commercial reliability standards. Its thin and lightweight structure supports broad integration without compromising brightness or efficiency. This technology offers a high-performance, manufacturable solution for ultra-wide color gamut displays and enables vivid, lifelike images across a wide range of devices.
