12 years ago, Canon splashed into the cinematography, wildlife, and sports realms with the 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 Cine-Servo Lens. The $70,000 lens was Canon’s answer to a challenge by filmmaker Ivo Norenberg: create a cinema lens for wildlife cinematography that could handle capturing animals at a distance and filming landscapes with the same tool. Challenge accepted and mission accomplished.
Inspired and driven by feedback and recent innovations, Canon announced and showcased a new version of the Cine-Servo lens at NAB Show 2026. Instead of “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger,” think “Wider, Better, Faster, Longer.”
The new CINE-SERVO 40-1200mm T5.0-10.8 is the world’s longest focal length cine-servo lens. It comes in PL and RF mounts, offers Super 35mm sensor coverage, and is full-frame compatible when using the 1.5 extender. The range can also expand from 60 to 1800 mm with the extender. And on top of all that, it is similar in length and weight to its legendary predecessor. Canon hopes this offering will allow for a mix of cinematic practices and broadcast practices, alongside the aforementioned original challenge by Norenberg: capture landscapes and extreme close-ups in nature with the same tool.
