In this episode of Editors on Editing, host Glenn Garland is joined by Myron Kerstein, the editor behind Wicked for Good, the sequel to the successful Wicked adaptation. In addition to editing Wicked, for which he was nominated for an Oscar and won the Eddie, Kerstein has edited project like Garden State, Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist and Crazy Rich Asians, for which he was nominated for the Eddie Award. He also edited Tick, Tick, Boom, for which he was co-nominated for the Oscar and won the Eddie.
Kerstein talks through the immense pressure of following up a beloved first film that combined comedy and whimsy with high emotional stakes. He describes the second film as “darker” and more dramatic, with “characters more conflicted,” which required him to “embrace the tone” rather than chase the lighter, comedic elements that audiences expected.
“The first film was about choices, the second film was about consequences,” Kerstein said.
The two also discuss what it means to push creative boundaries despite commercial pressures and audience expectations, sound design and editorial pacing and the collaborative nature of post-production.
