WhatsApp: How to abandon it the right way

This article is not about why to abandon WhatsApp before the end of January 2021. That has been amply covered —and continually debated— in many other places. In this extremely short article, I am only covering the right way to do it, if you make that decision as I did. Avoiding an essential step could be counterproductive when people try to contact you and may not be aware that you have left, and likely switched to Signal or Telegram (or both).

Steps

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap More options > Settings > Account > Delete my account.
  3. Enter your phone number in full international format and tap DELETE MY ACCOUNT.
  4. Select a reason for why you’re deleting your account in the dropdown.
  5. Tap DELETE MY ACCOUNT.
