Sports Solutions white paper for NewTek LatAm/EMEA 1

After the great popularity of the NewTek New Scopes white paper I published for NewTek US, the Latin American department then contracted me to translate/localize it for its own region. Later, the NewTek Latin American division requested a series of other white papers, starting with the NewTek Sports Solutions white paper. Despite its rather narrow title, this white paper will also be quite valuable for anybody planning a live multicamera video system. Shortly thereafter, the NewTek EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) division requested an English translation/localization. Ahead you’ll find the table of contents and more.

As I explain in the introduction of the Newtek Sports Solutions white paper, there are many decisions to be made when choosing HD cameras, a video mixer (“switcher”), DDRs (digital disk recorders), instant replay system, and character generator (or a marvelous “all-in-one” system like NewTek’s TriCasters and 3Plays). There are also decisions to be made about the type of resolution to use, both spatial resolution and temporal resolution (frames per second). In addition, when choosing robotic PTZ (pan/tilt/zoom) cameras, it’s important to realize how paying slightly more for a better TriCaster model can save you thousands of dollars (or euros) since you won’t have to buy controllers for them, let alone the power of macros to combine the movement of the cameras with graphics and effects in a reliable and repeatable action. That’s why I am so happy to collaborate with NewTek with these white papers. Of course, the purpose of them is not to replace NewTek’s operator’s manual, but to complement it during the planning stages.

Original table of contents

Here is the original table of contents of NewTek Sports Solutions white paper (translated to English):

  1. Resolutions: spatial versus temporal
  2. What you should know about progressive versus interlaced video
  3. How to choose the ideal framerate for your programs
  4. How to interpret, adjust, and match the menu settings in your cameras with that of your NewTek TriCaster or 3Play
  5. Slow motion: general concepts
  6. The advantages of robotic cameras
  7. How to control robotic cameras directly from your TriCaster and save money by not purchasing controllers
  8. Everything you ever wanted to know about genlock but were afraid to ask
  9. How NewTek’s fail-safe system can save your show
  10. A physical Spanish ISO keyboard: the most efficient way to enter text into your 3Play or TriCaster (see important note below)
  11. How to read, evaluate, and make adjustments with NewTek’s new waveform monitor
  12. Fundamentals of webcasting

Important note about the original chapter 10:

The original chapter 10 is not planned to be included in the English translation, so in that localized version the original chapter 11 will become chapter 10, and the original chapter 12 will become chapter 11. Those interested in this Spanish keyboard information for NewTek TriCaster/3Play will be able to read the original Castilian version of the white paper, be they in Andorra, Equatorial Guinea, Latin America, Spain, the US, or anywhere else.

Availability

This new white paper will soon be available as a free PDF download from the respective NewTek websites. In addition, I plan to make Kindle versions of each (as I did with the NewTek New Scopes white paper), which will be available on all Amazon websites worldwide, including books.AllanTepper.com and libros.AllanTepper.com. Both of those subdomains currently point to my author page at Amazon.com. I’ll announce direct links when available vía my mailing list and Twitter.

My latest book (paperback + ebook)

My most recent book is available in two languages, and in paperback as well as an ebook. The ebook format is Kindle, but even if you don’t have a Kindle device, you can read Kindle books on many other devices using a free Kindle app. That includes iPad, Android tablets, Mac computers, and Windows computers. Although generally speaking, Kindle books are readable on smartphones like Androids and iPhones, I don’t recommend it for this particular book since it contains both color photos and color comparison charts. The ebook is also DRM-free.
