Red Drops the (Specs) Bomb

It is 5am.

And I still haven’t gone to sleep. Then Pliny from Offhollywood drops me an link to Reduser’s page on all the specs for Epic, Scarlet, and the whole DSMC (Digital Stills and Motion Camera) thread that Jim has been posting to tonight. Read on….

OK, way too late to write it ALL out now, go see here for yourselves, page 3 is where the real fun begins. Jim is probably grinning like a mad fool with a really nice cigar I’ll bet even now.

Here’s the drill: a variety of bodies with different sensor sizes and capabilities, starting at $2500 for the “brain” only (just the sensor module and a raw mount for lens mounts) for a 2/3″ Mysterium X sensor with 1-120fps capabilities. A Super35 sized for $7K for the brain for a 5K, 1-30fps version, 6K full frame 35 for $12K also 1-30fps, $28K for 1-100 fps for at 5K, and it keeps going up from there.

Without knowing all the details, I think it’ll be very important to realize that even moreso than a Red One, THIS IS NOT A COMPLETE CAMERA AT THESE PRICE POINTS, so don’t believe any headlines screaming about 6K cameras for yadda yadda price point. There are a gazillion accessories, and it is all totally modular and build-it-like-Legos (or more likely an Erector set if it is still a zillion hex bolts to assemble these like a Red One).

The brains can be stacked (literally, linear bricks) to add additional modules for outputs, recording, power, etc.

I’ll get some sleep and post up all the details later, but there is tons more to read than what I’ve posted here, on that Reduser link. You can back up to check out pages 1 & 2, but page 3 is all the definitive info.

To bed, expect another report later in the day, they are having an event at 2pm, I’ll be there of course.

-mike, too lazy to post pics..till later…
