Nikon have today launced their first large sensor fixed lens compact camera, the Coolpix A. The camera features a 16MP DX (APS-C) sensor with a fixed 18.5mm f2.8 lens, equivalent to a 28mm in 35mm terms. With a price tag of $1100 Nikon are clearly targeting potential Fuji X100s buyers. The main differences are that the Nikon offers no built in viewfinder and only a f2.8 sperture whilst for just $100 more the X100s has a hybrid optical/electronic vieffinder and an f2.0 lens albeit in a 24mm instead of an 18.5mm. The Coolpix A does work with a range of Nikon DSLR accessories though so people who already own things like the WiFi adapters and flashes will likely be drawn to the familiarity of a Nikon camera. An optional optical viewfinder is available for $449 but I think this will seem a bit too expensive for most people. That's nearly half the price of the camera again and it doesn't have any electronic or moving parts !! The camera will be available in the spring time though and I am a BIG fan of having such cameras on the market. I think for a travel companion alongside a pros gear there is little better than a fixed lens camera such as this. It forces you to keep thinking and when I shot with a Fuji X100 for a year it was the best companion I've ever tried. I'ld like to test this camera out though, Nikon's DX sensors have been getting pretty darn good in low light and most interestingly…. they have left the optical low pass filter off this camera as they did with the D800E. This will add sharpness but at the expense of some moire artifcating in some areas, its interesting to see this becoming a mainstream feature now after the good reception it received on the D800E.
