NAB Sunday: Canon’s Presentation

NAB Sunday: Canon's Presentation 39

NAB Sunday: Canon's Presentation 1

Canon held a meeting in the Brenden Theater at the Palms, showing off two 4K short films (one shot by Shane Hurlbut with the 1D C, the other by Jeff Cronenweth, using the C500) and turning Larry Thorpe loose with a wealth of technical details.

The films looked rather nice, Cronenweth’s in particular (“Man and Beast”) had some of the most gorgeous skintones and breathtaking fine detail I’ve seen for a while.

Look, there’s way too much info for me to give a blow-by-blow accounting at half-past-midnight when I’m composing this; instead, I’m just gonna dump Larry Thorpe’s slide show on you. Apologies for not having properly perspective-corrected all my screenshots; I figured you rather have all the gory details regardless of geometrical imperfection than for me to have given up after having re-bent the first five or ten into relative straightness in Photoshop…

An exclusive event: Canon invited just me and several hundred of my closest friends…

“My, that’s a big one!”

The circled bit on the C500 is added-on stuff to handle additional connectors, hold processing, and dissipate heat.

Next: yes, there’s even more…

Larry warns that the 1D C’s place in this diagram isn’t fixed; it’ll float all over the place.

After the screening and preso, Canon held a reception in a nightclub/bar on the 51st floor where we could see the cameras up close.

Note the fat right side, with dual cooling fans and lots of connectors.

The front of the fat bit is a heatsink. It was pretty warm, too.

One of the new lenses. About $25K.

Not for sale just yet, alas!

Disclosures: I’m attending NAB on my own dime, and with a press pass to save the cost of admission. Canon did not offer me any material consideration for a positive writeup. and there is no material connection between me and Canon.
