Mobile sensor packages. Sounds a little bit like a bad science fiction tv series, but rest assured; This combination is going to change the way we think about, use and perceive information in the future.
Mobile access to enterprise data is becoming a very hot topic these days and we see a number of enterprise application and solution vendors performing an entrée into this market. As we enter the new world of mobile enterprise computing, we need to consider and leverage the device specific capabilities provided by mobile device/platform vendors such as Research in Motion, Apple Google, Nokia, Microsoft and even Samsung with their new Bada platform.
Traditionally as an ISV, we would consider who is providing the platform-based capabilities on which we wish to develop our wares. We need to dig a bit deeper with respect to mobility to understand the individual devices themselves, and moreover the sensors they’re equipped with. Here’s a quick look at some of the hardware and software based sensor packages to which I’m referring:
- High-resolution still cameras
- Video cameras
- GPS and location-based system support
- Accelerometers
- Gesture based UI capabilities
