Lowepro Flipside Sport 20L AW 1

I am always on the lookout for better ways to carry my photo equipment.  It seems I am finally buying less camera gear (probably not true!), but searching for more efficient ways to carry it.  One day I might be photographing skiers in the high mountains, the next day jamming my pack into an overhead compartment on my way to Cambodia.  But rarely do I find a pack that does both things really well…until Lowepro introduced the Flipside Sport 20L AW.

This pack is a version of their popular Flipside pack aimed at active outdoor shooters.  There are some significant features on this pack that really make it stand out.  First, it is big enough (deep enough) to hold a larger camera like the D4 with a lens attached.  This is perfect for my ski shoots; I just stop, flip the pack around to unzip and access my camera, take the shot, and flip the pack back into position.  Fast, efficient, and the pack never touches the ground.  Second, the pack has a great suspension system.  What is the point if your camera backpack can hold all your gear but feels like a sack of potatoes on your shoulders?  The Flipside Sport carries the weight nicely between shoulders and waist, even moving through bumpy terrrain.   Third, the pack has an innovative inner section that comes out and turns the pack into a normal backpack, great when you don't need to carry camera gear.  Fourth, the Flipside has a rain cover, bring on the nasty storm!  Fifth, the Flipside Sport has a hydration slot for your water bag so you can stay hydrated on the trail.  And finally, this pack has a paddled slot for an iPad or small computer.  My 11″ Macbook Air fits perfectly, making for easier travel with all my camera gear and computer in the same pack.

I have been using this pack a few months now in a variety of conditions, and I am impressed.  If you are looking for photo backback for your summer shooting adventures, take a look at the Lowepro Flipside 20L AW.  The pack retails for $179.99 and comes in orange and blue.
