Love Big Data? Infochimps Have an API Call for That

Austin-based data marketplaceInfochimps announces the launch of theirAPI today. The API provides access to the company’s Twitter and U.S. Census datasets, giving developers, researchers, and marketers the ability to take advantage of Infochimps’ data without requiring the computational resources necessary to query the information from billions of tweets and hundreds of millions of U.S. households.

Describing it as “Swiss army knife” of APIs, the Infochimps API includes the following calls to their Twitter and Census datasets:

  • Trstrank: Based on the data in theirTrst.me tool that was released in April, this service ranks Twitters users using the same algorithm Google utilizes to calculate page rank.
  • Influencer Metrics: This API call measures the number of retweets and replies in and out for a Twitter user, in order to calculate their influence.
  • Wordbag: This call identifies the 100 most characteristic words for a particular Twitter user. Included with each word is a number that indicates its frequency of use across the Twitter platform, as well as its frequency of use by the individual.
  • Conversations: This API call summarizes the interactions between two Twitter users. Currently, only replies are included, but Infochimps plans to add mentions and retweets soon.
  • Census Demographics: Given an IP address, this call returns Census demographics based on that address’s zip code.
