In this lesson, Kevin P McAuliffe discusses how edit a Vertical Video project for applications such as Snapchat in Avid Media Composer. This tutorial was inspired by a discussion on the Avid Editors of Facebook page, and is an important one, as with the move to more and more vertical applications such as digital signage and mobile, you’ll find your clients asking for this type of work more and more.
This tutorial started out from a discussion on the Avid Editors of Facebook page, where someone had asked a question about vertical video, and they got the usual ridicule about how people shouldn’t be shooting vertical video, blah, blah, blah. Well, believe it or not, there are more content providers than ever before looking to incorporate vertical video (or as it can be more commonly referred to as Digital Signage) onto their platforms. The leader for this is Snapchat, who’s application is a 9:16 aspect ration, basically meaning the reverse of standard 16:9 HD. Other content providers, like the companies that offer digital signs for the lobby of movies theatres, sporting venues and other similar places, are requesting vertical video more and more. In this lesson, Part 1, we talk about setting up your 9:16 project, linking to and setting up your media, and creating a very basic timeline. Part two will move on and talk about transcoding your footage, exporting it from Media Composer, and then using an application like Adobe’s Media Encoder to encode your final file for delivery.
