Point and shoot cameras typically don't receive a lot of coverage here but every once in a while a manufacturer will spring a new feature that surely gives a glimpse into the future of the pro market. Today Nikon have launched such a camera and it's called the S800c. The first camera to be based on an Android operating system just like many smart phones.

Honestly I'm surprised it has taken so long for one of the big players to bring this to market, and rumor has it Sony will be following shortly with their own app based interface for some new NEX cameras. Pro consumers have long been unsatisfied by camera interfaces and the omission of seemingly simple software inclusions like timelapse controls (I'm looking at YOU Canon). As cameras finally migrate to app based interfaces, as I'm sure they all will, we will hopefully see the manufacturers leave the architecture open enough for third party developers to create the apps that we all want to see. With the Nikon S800C they have included WiFi internet access and GPS positioning in this camera as well which allows for a wealth of possibilities in tracking your photographic movements with various Android apps and combining that data with your images to upload to the net.

Take a step into the future with me for a second and imagine being able to upload selected images to a wire service instantly from the camera using customized applications. Not everything has to be done that way of course but say you just got the shot of a lifetime, the epic shot of the winning goal in a soccer match. Now imagine captioning it quickly on camera and having it on the wire service before the referee has blown the whistle to start the game again. Or perhaps you are shooting a wedding and instantly sending selected to images to a projector that is playing a slideshow in real time at the reception. As I already alluded to, the timelapse possibilities would be of huge interest to many people.

All of this technology has been possible for some time, but in Canon's case they would rather sell you the $150 additional controller to do timelapses or the $260 GPS accessory. As soon as a couple of people break rank though, and offer this in a $350 point and shoot camera as the Nikon S800c is (!), then surely this will begin the winds of change and things like the stellar Magic Lantern hacks will become legitimate apps than anyone can choose to add to their camera.
