Hey Mac users! You’re not tied to Apple any more!

My new MAC Pro 8-core was in serious need of additional RAM to run the bigger applications and shove around the pixels from the Canon 5D Mark II. Apple didn’t tell us about this little RAM problem up front, but they were happy after the fact to price additional 8G memory at $400!!!!! You’ve got to be kidding! Big no sale from us.

I am so lucky I chanced to get a recommendation for a company I’d never heard of: Other World Computing, or better known as their web site MACsales. This is an unabashed recommendation of a great place to buy all kinds of MAC stuff. Tutorials too! The site has so many products it will make your head swim. I found the memory pages, but really didn’t know what to order, so I did the old fashioned thing and called in for tech support.
The customer service advice I got on the phone steered me to the exact right RAM purchase for my new MAC Pro. I would not have known what to order without the rep’s help! It seems that not all sizes of RAM play well together. I would not have known this, so he helped me to avoid an incompatible purchase and needless expense. Memory of course is one of the easiest upgrades to do yourself. From Other World Computing I bought 16G of RAM for about 25% of what Apple charges for 8G. And no shipping charge. Wow!
Today I just received this first order from OWC. My order came in record time in an absolutely beautiful package. It was a shiny blue bubble pack (which I shall keep to put stuff in) and big safety no-tamper label.

Inside the memory sticks were protected in a box worthy of a jeweler, along with a proper packing list and a helpful color promo card showing other products I am definitely interested in.

Here’s the reason I found OWC such a valuable partner. In the past I’ve always had the impression if you buy third party upgrades you would certainly affect your warranty. Indeed once I had an Apple rep on line refuse to talk to me, because I had bought another company’s memory. Same goes for indwelling hard drives. In fact, YES, you can upgrade your Mac without compromising your factory warranty from Apple. Click here to read an OWC blog article that applies to PCs and Mac Pros too…like adding more HDDs or even SSDs.

Karl and I have been digital and full self-contained in image manipulation for 12 years. Now the hardest thing for us is choosing the right hardware, installations, trouble shooting – simply because we didn’t grow up thinking inside machines. This is where the OWC people can really make a difference by steering you in the right direction for your application. Advice and a great price at the same time.

Honestly, Apple cost is a real problem for us, as individual artisans. It seems to us now that Apple is charging off the charts, perhaps in a very greedy manner. I was able to purchase through the university where I teach, so a little price break, but the SSD admin disk + 2 indwelling 2TB drives were expensive. Of course we also have iPhones, iPad, MAC Book, etc.

Other World Computing is one place you’ll find speed, quality and price all in one store!
