HEXO+: Your Autonomous Aerial Camera

When the creators of HEXO+ decided to go ahead with their project, they knew their goal: create a system that would make aerial filming possible in the most remote places: on mountains, in the snow, and in all sorts of unpredictable situations that were quite a pain to deal with when trying to sync a drone pilot, a cameraman and a rider. The result is HEXO+ – an intelligent aerial follow camera: no pilot, no cameraman, no headache.

Soon after starting toying with the idea, the team realized that it had the potential to change the face of all kinds of aerial filming, making it dead simple. So they combined their expertise in action-sports movie-making, drone design and aeronautic software to create a drone capable of autonomously flying, filming and following, giving you access to amazing aerial shots with the bare minimum: a drone, a camera and an app on your smartphone.

Funded in just one hour, at Kickstarter, reaching the goal of $50.000, the project has now reached a total support over $320.000, while there are still 29 days to go. The initial success lead the team to more ambitious goals in terms of technology, and now a new software feature option was implemented: Live Video Feed in your smartphone.

The process is simple: Instead of framing your shot within a 3D environment, simply turn your camera on and press launch in your app. Your drone will fly into its default position and the video will start streaming directly into your smartphone. On the live video, pinch to set the distance between you and your drone, slide laterally for panning and vertically for height. WYSIWYG framing!

Now the team has more up their sleeve: they’ve established a new stretch goal at $500K that will, if reached, enable them to take what many consider already is an awesome package to the next level of usability. The aim: to make HEXO+ the most intelligent drone that follows and films you autonomously. Aerial filming for everyone. That’s the dream!
