Heading to Vancouver for Two Events

My wife happens to work for an Olympic sponsor and I was lucky enough to tag along in Beijing, and now I’m prepping to leave for a quick three day, two event romp to Vancouver.

The trip this time presents some unique challenges in terms of weather, logistics and my personal shot goals. The first thing I needed to consider is TSA flight requirements and what I’d have to check, vs. carry on. Additionally I needed to check Olympic guidelines for any restrictions on equipment at events. So far I’m in luck as the international carry-on rules seem to have settled a tad since Christmas. Additionally, according to Vancouver2010.com, it seems that as long as I’m not re-broadcasting live, I am OK. There are some restrictions there, but nothing I can’t overcome.

The next few issues come down to what I’m willing to lug around, travel with, and to be honest, actually focus my time on instead of actually enjoying the events. As you’re aware, it’s often difficult to enjoy an event if you’re also taking photos or video. I’m hitting Men’s Showboard Finals as well as a Men’s USA Hockey game. I really want great photos with close-ups as well as great video. The Canon 5D mkII is my choice and was able to get a loan from a friend. I’m also bringing only 2 lenses; Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens, and a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens. Also brining a carbon fiber monopod for stabilization. Figure I can use that in my seat too.

Since I’m hitting Men’s Snowboard and the weather is questionable, I needed to make sure my gear is covered. I’m bringing my favorite bag, the Thinktank Rotation 360 which also comes with a rain cover which I”m likely to use. My concern however is what happens if it’s raining (likely to be as I understand it) while I’m shooting video/photos? I picked up an AquaTech SS200 to keep the equipment dry.

I’m set, I’m packed and now all I need to do is shoot. I’ll be posting some of the photos here and some of the video on our sister site ProVideo Coalition.
