Finding the Right ‘Best Practice’ Requires a Broader View of YOUR Digital Lifecycle

Digital Asset Management – The creation, acquisition, use, maintenance, modification, storage and archival of critical assets and data is vital to most organizations performance and success. In today’s environment, the ease of creating massive amounts of content or acquiring content is the easy part. Management what you have to reflect its value and distributing the content quickly and easily can be critical to any business revenue stream. The choices are simple…

  1. First to market, fastest to market or lose out on your competitive edge and revenue
  2. Archival and Preservation is mission critical for your organization or…
  3. A combination of both.

In many organizations, hours of wasted time finding valuable assets or delivering accurate assets can have near catastrophic financial results though it is often overlooked as a problem. Asset management, whether physical media or in digital form, is especially important to the digital supply chain overall. We all know this, how can we make this better through “best practices”?

Good asset management includes being able to deal with “tough” asset situations, such as end user expectations, metadata, rights management, as well as solving problems with file transfer, delivering, storing and archiving your valuable assets. While DAM itself is a discipline and an on-going process, factors such as competitors, end users or customers, and technology force a constant evolution of this practice.

One must constantly evaluate, understand, and apply these “new” practices to stay competitive. Finding the right practices or best practice, can be a complicated and precarious effort. While many new trends claim to be “best practices”, the truth is that every company has different needs and different levels for success. The challenge for the smart organization or “managers” of assets in an organization, is to select the practices and technology that are best for your organization and to avoid investing in those that aren’t effective to your needs, the culture of your organization or even workflow.

Technological reliability, accurate information, optimizing workflow, being productive and efficient is a top priority. While most organizations understand this, there is an opportunity to be more effective with a fresh view and approach to DAM – What is the VALUE of YOUR organizations assets? How does YOUR organization work? A few simple questions can have a tremendous impact on what YOUR “best partices” should be. How does your organization work internally? Where do you want your assets to be as they evolve? How do you manage rights, metadata and associated assets and information? What do YOU do with the assets? This approach, while simple, is just a pain smart approach. The evolving digital supply chain with sophisticated technology that captures, manages and delivers content should be active, ongoing and insightful. Considering the culture and goals of your organization should produce a view of what YOUR business needs. Once realizing this, you will be in a far better position to determine or seek out expertise, which will help you find what is the “best practices” for YOU.
