Codex, the leading developer of digital media recorders and media management systems for film and television production, and ARRI, the world’s largest manufacturer and distributor of motion picture camera, digital intermediate and lighting equipment, have had an incredible year with the ARRI ALEXA camera and the Codex ARRIRAW recorder.

Beginning with Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close early in 2011, ARRI and Codex Digital have seen a huge demand for ARRIRAW recording for feature film projects worldwide. The two companies have continued to work together to raise the bar – adding the ability to capture ARRIRAW at up to 60 FPS and supporting the ARRI ALEXA Studio, finessing the workflow with the new Codex Vault, and reducing the cost of ARRIRAW .

Opening in the US on May 4th, 2012, Marvel’s The Avengers, was shot with ARRI ALEXA cameras and Codex ARRIRAW recorders. Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey had never shot with a digital camera before and did extensive testing before production began in order to feel comfortable with the workflow and images. Seamus explains, “The Avengers was the first movie that I shot digitally. Fortunately, shooting ARRIRAW with the combination of ARRI ALEXA cameras and Codex Onboard Recorders made the transition easy. Everything worked flawlessly and the images look amazing.”

The Codex Vault series is the next generation, modular, location-based media management environment. Fast transfers, automated production management, full reporting, rugged design and a compact size make the Codex Vault the hub of an ARRIRAW on-set or near-set file based workflow. It is designed to eliminate much of the complexity involved in designing workflows while taking full advantage of the efficiencies of file-based production and the ability to share rich metadata. It provides a single, standardized workflow with a simple, task-based user interface that anyone can use. It has the capability to generate deliverables in all formats required for dailies review, post production and archive.

ARRI and Codex will continue their partnership into the future, working together to deliver incredible image quality along with efficient, secure workflows. Codex Managing Director Marc Dando says, “ARRI are a great partner and we are excited to continue our collaboration as we continue to innovate and raise the quality bar with their camera products.” ARRI’s Head of Market Strategy, Neil Fanthom adds, “Codex is ARRI’s supplier of choice for premium uncompressed, uncompromised ARRIRAW recording and workflow solutions for the ALEXA family; the Codex “Vault” is a unique and essential new ingredient for secure digital cinema data management and a valuable part of the ARRIRAW workflow.”

At NAB, Codex introduced a new style rear mount for the Codex ARRIRAW recorder and the ARRI ALEXA camera family, as well as new lightweight Codex datapacks which significantly reduce weight for handheld situations.

ARRI ALEXA cameras and Codex recorders were used on around 100 feature films in the last year, including “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close”, “The Avengers”, “R.I.P.D”, “Gravity”, “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” and “Trance”. Films currently in production include “Skyfall” (Roger Deakins), “The Lone Ranger” (Bojan Bozelli), “The Seventh Son” (Thomas Newton Siegel) and “Hummingbird” (Chris Menges).
