Cinegear 2012 – SmallHD DP7

Cinegear 2012 - SmallHD DP7 3

At Cinegear 2012, we had an opportunity to visit with Wes Philips of SmallHD.  Beyond their very popular, DP4, DP4EVF and the DP6, Wes gave us a peek at the highly anticipated DP7.

The DP7 will be available in two versions, the DP7 OLED and the DP7 High-Bright.  Both units will be able to convert to variety of signals at the same time including:

  • SDI to SDI and HDMI (simultaneously)
  • HDMI to SDI and HDMI
  • Component to SDI, HDMI, and Component
  • Composite to SDI, HDMI, and Component
  • The DP7’s ability to convert and split an incoming signal internally eliminates the need for any additional signal converters and their accompanying nest of wires.

Dual-Camera Monitoring allows you to input two cameras and view both simultaneously by using picture in picture feature.

The DP7 will accept separate audio and video signals and mix down these streams into one signal for monitoring audio from an outside source.

    High-Bright vs OLED

When choosing which version to go with, think about your applications.  Here are some things to considers:
    OLED

  • Excellent viewing angle
  • Excellent black level
  • No ghosting and smearing artifacts during fast motion due to sub-millisecond response time
  • Wide gamut and vivid colors because no backlight is used
  • The trade off here is brightness — which will be noticeable when in daylight scenarios
  • High-Bright LCD

  • No geometric distortion
  • Little or no flicker depending on backlight technology
  • Not affected by screen burn-in
  • 1000 nits – the brightest camera top monitor available
  • Both variations are 7 inch, 720p monitors  with a resolution of 1280×800 and contain the following:

  • Flush mount integrated polycarbonate screen protector
  • Specially coated anti-reflective, hydrophobic and  scratch resistant screen protector.
  • 1 x YpBpr (Hirose Breakout cable to BNC or RCA)
  • 5 rugged ¼” 20 thread points on all sides All ports recessed and locked for protection
  • Inputs

  • 2 x SDI (BNC)
  • 1 x HDMI (With Lock)
  • 1 x YpBpr (Hirose Breakout cable to BNC or RCA)
  • 1 x Composite (Hirose Breakout Cable to BNC)
  • Full-Size SD Card Slot
